Recent Case Studies Dive into How CBD Affects Your Canine Ally
In 2018, a group of veterinarians did a study on the effectiveness of CBD oil in dogs with osteoarthritis. It found that 80% of dogs given between 2-8 mg per lbs. of body weight had less pain and greater mobility.
A study in 2019 found that dogs given CBD oil with anti-seizure medication had fewer seizures than their placebo counterparts. But these results aren’t conclusive.
It’s important to note that these short-term case studies shine a positive light on using CBD for dogs. However, it is important to note that no long-term studies exist to show its long-term effectiveness or side-effects.
What to Consider When Estimating CBD Dosage for Dogs
The right dosage depends on four criteria: their weight, the type of product, the quality of that product, and the symptoms you want to address.
Before you get started, you need to answer the following questions.
1. How Much Does Your Dog Weigh?
First, determine how much your dog weighs. It’s easiest to determine the right dosage if you measure your dog’s weight in pounds.
If your dog won’t sit on the scale long enough to get a reading, weigh yourself first, then, pick up your dog and subtract your weight from the new weight of you and your dog combined.
2. Are You Going to Use Oil or Treats?
Palm Organix™CBD Oil (aka tinctures) come in a 225 mg (30 servings of 7.5 mg) bottle. It’s tasteless in its natural form and you can mix it with your dog’s food for easy administration. CBD Oil is an excellent choice especially for large dogs as it is an economical way to introduce CBD to your pets daily health and wellness routine. This is especially the case for dogs that weigh more than 25 lbs.
Another popular choice is the Palm Organix™ pet chew. Each pet chew treat contains 2 mg of CBD. These work great for dogs that weigh 25 lbs or less as one chew a day would generally suffice in most cases. Treats are also fine for large dogs but you will need more than one 2mg chew to administer an effective amount of CBD to larger dogs. As stated earlier, it is more cost effective to use the CBD Pet Tincture for dogs above 25 pounds.
3. What’s the Quality of Your CBD Pet Product?
All Palm Organix™ pet products contain natural terpenes, organic hemp, and are made in the USA. They’re also formulated by an in-house veterinarian and designed specifically for pets.
The entire line of Palm Organix™ Pet CBD is free of:
- Tree nuts
- And sugar
Furthermore, every batch of the Palm Organix™ Pet CBD line is tested by our supplier and then retested by an independent third party lab. This makes Palm Organix™ CBD a perfect choice for your four-legged pal. When choosing a CBD brand for your pet, most veterinarians strongly suggest you avoid any brands that contain THC. Even in trace amounts, pets do not do well with any type of psychoactive ingredients.
4. What Symptoms Are You Trying to Address?
Intense or chronic symptoms may need a higher dosage to help your dog find comfort. But, it’s best practice to start with the recommended dosage and monitor your dog’s behavior.
How to Estimate the Right CBD Dosage
The Palm Organix™ in-house veterinarian recommends 2mg per 25 lbs. However, you should work with your vet to find the right dosage for your dog. Don’t be surprised if it takes several iterations to find the right dosage.
Here are some examples:
- If your dog weighs 75 lbs, he or she will need 6 mg CBD per day for improved health and wellness. Here’s the math: 75 lbs divided by 25 lbs multiplied by 2 mg. Therefore you could use three treats or approximately 3/4 of a serving of tincture.
- If your dog weighs 90 lbs, he or she will need 7.2 mg of CBD per dose. The math: 90 lbs divided by 25 lbs multiplied by 2 mg. You could round up to 7.5 mg which is one serving of Palm Organix CBD tincture.
Here’s the general formula: Your dog’s weight (lbs) / 25 lbs x 2 mg = the right CBD dosage for your dog.
Depending on the symptoms your buddy’s experiencing, he or she may need a higher dosage. Start with the general formula and monitor your dog’s comfort level over the next few days. If you are not getting the desired results, slowly increase the serving as needed to soothe your dog’s symptoms. If you plan on giving your furry friend more than 4 mg/per 25 lbs., it is recommended that you consult with your veterinarian.
Palm Organix™ CBD Oil Tincture vs. CBD Dog Treats
For smaller dog breeds weighing around 25 lbs or less, CBD dog treats are a terrific choice as they are simple to administer and most dogs love the taste. Each treat contains 2 mg of CBD, which is a good starting point for smaller dogs. You could also use the Oil/Tincture however such small doses of oil can be hard to accurately measure. This is why our customers tell us treats work best for smaller canine pals.
For large dogs, CBD tincture works well and are more economical. However, this also depends on how your dog takes to CBD oil. You can try giving it directly to the dog in his or her mouth, however, if this method does not work, it is very common for dog owners to simply apply the CBD tincture directly to the dogs kibble. If he or she won’t eat it, CBD treats might work as an alternative.
At the end of the day, it ultimately comes down to you and your dog’s preference as both CBD Tinctures and CBD Treats get to the same result. Be sure to estimate the correct dosage based on his or her weight before making a decision. This will help determine which option is most cost-efficient.
