High Quality Hemp Extract Criteria

Superior Soil

Not all hemp is created equal, hence not all CBD hemp extract oil is the same.  In order to have high quality hemp oil products, the first step is know where your CBD brand is sourcing their products.  In order for hemp to grow well outdoors, the soil should be high in alkaline.  Soil PH levels should be between 6 and 7.5. Good quality hemp most often comes from farms in the United States which have nutrient rich soils, such as Colorado or Kentucky.

Hemp plants roots tend to grow very deep and the Hemp Plant is very adept in finding water on its own.  Unlike other crops, hemp plants generally only require 30 inches of rain per year making Colorado or Kentucky a great choice to grow Hemp for CBD hemp extract products.

non gmo

Potent Hemp Seeds

It starts with the hemp seeds being used to grow the cannabis sativa plant. Using a natural genetic strain that is high in cannabinoid content, terpenes, and flavonoids but also low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). For example, a phytocannabinoid rich (PCR) hemp seed will deliver a stronger, more concentrated hemp plant than a regular industrial hemp seed.  It is advisable to look for products that have not been genetically modified as well (non gmo).

natural

Sustainably Farmed

Top hemp farms use sustainable farming processes to grow their hemp cannabis plant.  This will help ensure that the final products do not contain any heavy metals or pesticides. This process means that the crops are raised using natural methods to maintain soil fertility and control pests, and harsh pesticides or chemicals are not used.

gmp certified

Certified Facilities:

Top quality hemp extract should be processed in a GMP certified facility. GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Process, which is how governmental agencies will classify processing facilities. The certification and licensing ensures that the facility is a well run and is a high quality operation due to constant monitoring by an outside agency.

Farm Bill Compliant

Per the 2018 Farm Bill Act, hemp CBD oil in order to be legal federally, must contain less than  0.3% THC.  Be aware that there can be trace amounts of THC is your CBD oil. In many instances,  some CBD oil brands will source their products from farms and processors who sell a THC- Free (0.0%) line of hemp extract products. This avoids having to constantly monitor THC content as it is completely removed.

lab tested

Lab Testing

Make sure that your CBD brand is  third party lab testing their CBD oil products.  Generally speaking, CBD suppliers will sell their product to retailers will deliver the hemp oil products with Certificates of Quality Assurances (COA’s).  COA’s generally contain the following information; The CBD oil conforms for; appearance, color, odor, cannabinoid content and microbial testing.  Additionally, the COA will contain cannabinoid potency for CBD, CBN, CBG and also test to ensure the THC level is below .3% mandated by the Farm Bill Act of 2018.  Furthermore, COA’s will test for Terpene levels, Residual Solvents and Heavy Metals, for the latter two to ensure those are both low and below the required minimums

COA’s are a good starting point but the high end CBD companies, will then send out the CBD oil for third party lab tests to test again for all those criteria tested in the original COA. The additional testing ensure that the customer is truly getting what is being sold; a high quality, pure, effective CBD oil rich in Phytocannabinoids, terpenes and less than .3% THC.  Third party lab testing is expensive so many CBD retailers skip this process in order to keep their costs down.  All testing should be transparent, and be readily available on the web site and also via QR codes listed on their packaging.

Quality Extraction Process:

There are two primary methods for CBD oil extraction from Hemp Plants; Supercritical CO2 Extraction and Ethanol Extraction.

1. What is Supercritical CO2 Extraction:

Supercritical CO2 extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide to separate various components from the cannabis sativa plant hemp plant to produce hemp extract.  This extraction method produces a CBD oil product high in Cannabinoids, Phytocannabinoids and Terpenes with the removal of chlorophyll andwaxes.  The end result is a CBD oil with a Phytocannabinoid Rich Hemp (PCR), minor cannabinoids, flavonoids, and Terpenes.

2. What is Ethanol Extraction:

Ethanol extraction is a process of soaking raw Hemp in ethanol to pull trichomes into the solvent.  The CBD oil is then removed, the liquid CBD oil is filtered and the alcohol is then purged from the extracted material during Ethanol extraction.  Both supercritical extraction and ethanol extraction are similar with the end intent of removing chlorophyll, waxes and of course the THC compounds.

made in usa

European and Asian Hemp CBD Oil….  Buyer Beware

Many Hemp CBD brands in an effort to cut costs source their Hemp CBD from Europe or Asia.  European and Asian Hemp in many instances tend to be inconsistent in both CBD and THC content.  Said another way, in many cases, European and Asian hemp CBD may be low in CBD, phytocannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids.  Additionally, the THC level may be above the .3% THC max that is required for CBD oil to be legally sold in the USA.

If you are shopping at health food stores for CBD oil, be sure to confirm with the retailer that the product is not from overseas.

Benefits of CBD

CBD is being sought to help with many different types of health benefits. Consumers may benefit from the anti inflammatory properties of hemp extract, as well as the calming effects. There are even beauty products that have added CBD and other essential oils to their products. CBD is thought to be more effective when mixed with a carrier oil that is high in essential fatty acids such as MCT oil. The study of CBD and the health information surrounding CBD is something that is still relatively new.
