How Long Does CBD Last in the Body

The CBD compound is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in both the hemp plant, and the marijuana cannabis plant. The Farm Bill of 2018 legalized CBD products in the United States that are derived and formulated from hemp plants, as long as the total concentration of THC content in the product is below .3%. THC is the cannabinoid associated with marijuana and has psychoactive effects that may cause a high, or altered state.

CBD is legal to use and does not cause an intoxicating effect however, many people still wonder how long CBD can be detected in the system after use. This is also known as the half life of a product. The general answer is on average CBD will last 2 to 5 days in the human body after consumption or application. To be clear, this does not mean the effects of CBD last this long, only the that the CBD cannabinoid will remain detectable in the body this long. Additionally, there are many important factors that will impact how long the actual CBD molecules or chemical compound will remain in your body. Lets take a look at these various factors:

CBD Dosage

CBD products come in a variety of strengths, and the amount of CBD in a particular product should always be clearly labeled on the bottle or jar, typically listed as "mg of CBD". Large doses, or high doses will last longer in the body than smaller or low doses. A higher dose would be considered anything over 50 mgs of CBD per day. It may also depend on if you consume all of your daily CBD in a single dose, or small doses throughout the day. Consuming all at once will tend to leave the body quicker than being spread out over time.

Frequency of Use

For maximum health benefits most people will take CBD on a daily basis. This allows the CBD levels to gradually build up in the body and stay in the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This is most effective if treating the symptoms of inflammation, chronic pain, or anxiety issues. CBD will stay in the system longer for daily users of CBD. For those taking CBD for the first time, or perhaps only once in awhile, CBD will dissipate from the body sooner because it has not been built up or stored in the body's fat cells.

Your Body

Everyone's body is different, unless maybe you are a twin. Body weight, body mass index, and metabolism will effect the length of time CBD stays in your system. The body's fat cells will hold on to CBD so a persons body type also plays a part in the half life of CBD. Those with a higher amount of fat cells will retain CBD in their system longer than those with a lean build. A fast metabolism will also play a part in decreasing the time CBD is in your system. The faster the metabolism, the quicker CBD is metabolized and out of the system.

Consumption Method

The delivery method or method of consumption will play a big part in determining CBD half-life. Let's explore the various different ways CBD can be used.

  • CBD Edibles- This group includes CBD gummies, CBD capsules, CBD drinks and anything that is processed through the digestive system. These types of products tend to be absorbed slower and last longer in the body. However, they will absorb a bit faster on an empty stomach than on a full stomach.
  • CBD Oils - Also known as CBD tinctures, CBD oil is placed under the tongue, and absorbed through the capillaries of the mouth. This method allows for quicker absorption, and will not last as long as an edible method.
  • CBD Topicals- Topical CBD such as salves, lotions, creams, and transdermal patches will have the slowest absorption rate, and will stay in the body the longest. Even though topicals are not ingested, they will fully absorb into the body, and its ECS.
  • CBD Vape- In recent years this method of use has become less popular, but it is an effective method for the quickest effects. Vaping CBD will produce the shortest time span of CBD left in the system.

Types of CBD

Now that we have discussed the different factors, let's take a look at the three types of non prescription, pure CBD available on the market today.

  1. Full-Spectrum CBD- Full-Spectrum CBD products contain a variety of cannabinoids, including CBD and trace amounts of THC.
  2. Broad-Spectrum CBD- Broad-Spectrum CBD products contain a variety of cannabinoids, including CBD, but have 0.0% THC
  3. CBD Isolate- CBD isolate products have only the CBD cannabinoid and no other cannabinoids.

Drug Testing

People often need to do drug screening for employment, schooling, sports, and for medical or military purposes. There are many different types of tests, hair tests, saliva tests, blood tests, and urine tests in use today. First thing, most of these drug screening tests will be looking for THC metabolites, not CBD. If you are using a full spectrum CBD product please note that you may test positive for THC.

Some tests will screen for cannabis use in general, and this is where CBD users may face an issue. There is a chance that CBD may trigger a false positive result for traces of THC or cannabis. CBD and cannabis products are so genetically similar, it is best to avoid the use of all types of CBD if frequent or random drug testing is a part of your daily life.

When to Avoid CBD

It is always a good idea to discuss using CBD hemp products with your health care provider before starting a regime. CBD may impact the bioavailability and absorption rate of certain prescription medications. Pregnant women and those who are breast feeding should also avoid CBD use, as there has not been enough scientific research in this area or on CBD's effect on breast milk. Athletes, both professional, collegiate, or even at the high school, level should thoroughly review the rules and regulations of their sport before starting a CBD journey.

Conclusion

So how long does CBD oil stay in your body? As you can see there are a number of factors that will determine how long CBD will remain in a persons system. Different CBD products as well as how much CBD is being consumed will have various CBD effects. The amount of time CBD will stay in a persons body can really fluctuate. The bottom line is if you are concerned about testing positive for CBD or THC, the best way thing to do is to discontinue CBD use for four or more weeks before any type of testing.
