Can CBD Help with Lyme Disease?

The fact is, CBD is not an FDA cure or treatment for Lyme disease. CBD is only FDA approved for the treatment of a rare form of Epilepsy in the drug Epidiolex. However, CBD might be able to help ease some Lyme disease symptoms.

What You Need to Know About CBD

  • CBD is an all-natural supplement: CBD is sourced directly from the hemp plant, a species of the cannabis plant. It is Federally legal to to purchase CBD since the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, however some states do still have some restrictions. Over the counter CBD natural products must have less than .3% THC content. People are using CBD oil products for many different health conditions, but most often for relief from joint pain, sleep issues, anxiety or stress relief, and to improve overall quality of life.
  • CBD works with existing systems in the body: CBD achieves its beneficial effects in the body by working directly with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) already present in the body. This system is responsible for maintaining the balance, or homeostasis, of our bodies and it does so by regulating any number of important functions like metabolism, inflammation, secretion of neurotransmitters and hormones, regulation of temperature, and other key functions. The ECS has a number of cannabinoid receptors that interact with CBD cannabinoid.
  • CBD has very few side effects: CBD has very few mild side effects which generally can be remedied simply by adjusting the dose being taken. These side effects of CBD may include nausea, dry mouth, diarrhea, and fatigue.
  • CBD is different than medical marijuana: One of the most common assumptions about CBD is that it is essentially the same thing as medical cannabis or marijuana. CBD and marijuana are actually quite different and function very differently within the body. While both marijuana and CBD may provide benefits, marijuana contains THC which may produce intoxicating or psychoactive side effects. Additionally, marijuana may not be legal in your state.

What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection (Borrelia Burgdorferi) which is passed from the tick bite of a deer tick. Typically it takes 24 to 36 hours for the tick to infect their human host. In the early stages the first symptoms will be a red bulls eye rash. The bacteria may have other negative side effects on the whole body including the immune system and the nervous system. Lyme Disease patients are not contagious, and can not spread the lyme borreliosis to other humans or pets.

Lyme Disease is more prevalent in the Spring and Summer months, when people are outside more, especially if they visit wooded areas, where deer tend to live. The disease is more common in the North East and Atlantic Coastline areas of the United States.

Effective Treatment for Lyme Disease

If the tick is still adhered to the skin, it should be removed carefully, as to not break it apart, and immediately. The best way to treat Lyme Disease is with antibiotic treatment. These antibiotics may be administered orally or intravenously, and the course of therapy can last 2 to 4 weeks. Most Lyme Disease sufferers respond well to this treatment however 10% to 20% develop post-treatment lyme disease syndrome. This for of chronic Lyme Disease causes the patient to continue to suffer from the Lyme symptoms even after they have received antibiotic therapy.

CBD should only be started with your Doctor's approval, and after the course of antibiotics, as CBD may interfere with the antibiotic absorption. CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, which may help with reducing the inflammation that is causing pain. Some other benefits of CBD are the impact on mood and anxiety. CBD may help promote a calmer mood and disposition. Finally, CBD may help with sleep issues.

CBD products are not an alternative treatment option for the disease, but should be considered only as a possible supplement for relief severe symptoms.

Hopefully in the future there will be more clinical trials, scientific studies, and CBD research to identify conclusive effects of CBD on Lyme Disease.

Effectiveness of CBD

If your health care provider has cleared and approved you to try CBD it is important that you choose quality products. The best way to identify quality products is to look for a CoA or Third Party lab testing result, which will ensure potency and purity.

Positive effects from the use of CBD also depend on taking the correct amount. There are no official dosing guidelines, but on average most people take 25mg of CBD daily. However, based on weight, metabolism, severity of issue, and sensitivity levels you may require more or less.

Types of CBD

There are three legal types of CBD available on the market today.

  1. Full Spectrum- which contains other cannabinoids along with the CBD to provide an entourage effect, plus up to .3% THC
  2. Broad Spectrum- which is just like Full Spectrum, minus the THC
  3. CBD Isolate- which will contain only the CBD cannabinoid, and no others, and does not create an entourage effect.

Once you have determined which variety of CBD you can the choose whether you would like to try a topical or Edible product.

  • Edible CBD includes Capsules, Softgels, Tincture oil, Gummies, and any other form of CBD you ingest. Edible CBD allows the cannabinoids to work throughout the body, and not just one targeted specific area.
  • Topical CBD includes lotions, creams, salves, bath bombs and any form that applied to the skin. Topicals allow for CBD to be targeted to a specific area of the body you are seeking relief.
