What is CBD Oil?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is one of over 113 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, which includes two species, marijuana and hemp.

One of the common misconceptions people have regarding CBD is that they believe CBD can get you high. This is understandable as marijuana and Hemp both come from the Cannabis plant, however, CBD is generally produced from the Hemp plant which has low levels of THC as compared to the marijuana plant which has high levels of THC.  THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the psychoactive ingredient present in marijuana which is known to create the psychoactive effects many know as a “high.”  Therefore, with only trace amounts of THC in CBD, you cannot get high.

CBD has many different properties that may be beneficial for a variety of ailments however, at this time, CBD is not FDA approved nor intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

There are some legalities over people purchasing CBD, but at the Federal level, CBD is legal as long as it does not contain more than 0.3% THC. Be sure to check with your state to determine the laws unique to CBD use before buying any CBD oil.

The Endocannabinoid System

So how does CBD work in the body, anyway? Along with all the other systems in the body, humans have an endocannabinoid system commonly referred to as the “ECS.”  This system contains many receptors that work to keep areas of the body in homeostasis or balance, such as sleep, pain, mood, and more.

The ECS Receptors work with endocannabinoids produced by the brain to keep the body balanced and maintained. However, these receptors may potentially work with plant cannabinoids.

All mammals, including dogs and cats, have an ECS system. So, in theory, CBD oil may have benefits to promote health as well!

CBD For Pets: How Does it Help?

Because dogs have an endocannabinoid system, they have the receptors that may interact with CBD. As of this time CBD has not been FDA approved to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease in humans or pets. However, here are some conditions that CBD oil is being considered for pets.

1. Joint Discomfort

As pets age, they're subject to joint pain and lack of mobility. Joint pain causes the quality of life to diminish which stems from many conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia.  If this is the case, your pet will lack the mobility, energy, and enthusiasm they once had as a puppy or kitten.

Since CBD oil is believed to possibly have natural anti-inflammatory benefits, CBD may help to reduce the inflammation causing  symptoms of discomfort, leaving your dog with a better quality of life.

2. Nausea And Vomiting

There are several reasons why pets experience nausea. Eating a foreign object, toxic foods, medications, or irritable bowel disease can all cause nausea. It's uncomfortable and can inhibit your pet from getting the nutrients they need in their diet because they don't feel like eating.

CBD oil may help reduce the digestive inflammation that commonly occurs with nausea. Once nausea subsides, their appetite increases and your dog will likely eat again.

3. Separation Anxiety

Many pets have fears of loud noises, people, objects, or being left alone. When your pet is afraid, they may become uncontrollable and may become harmful to themselves or others. They may display destructive behavior including, chewing, barking, pacing, drooling, and other unwanted behavior. Another common issue with pets is separation anxiety, which occurs when you leave your pet at home alone. Often times when the pet is left alone, they become fearful, destructive, and anxious.

If you have a pet that has severe fear, or anxiety issues, CBD oil may be worth a try. It is believed that CBD may help support the feeling of happiness and well-being.

4. Control Seizures

One of the highlights of CBD oil is its use in the drug Epidiolex.  In fact this is the only FDA approved use of CBD to date. This exciting new drug  has been shown to help control symptoms of epilepsy in humans, especially children. Epilepsy is a condition that causes one to have seizures randomly.

Dogs and cats can also suffer from epilepsy. Using CBD for this ailment might be beneficial and can help give the pet and the owner more peace of mind.

What Are The Side Effects of CBD Oil For Pets?

For humans, the side effects of CBD are very few. For pets, though, getting too much CBD could cause some mild side effects including:

  • Dry mouth and excessive thirst
  • Lethargy
  • Lowered blood pressure

While CBD oil is natural, it is possible for your pet to have an adverse reaction to it. If your dog or cat has a negative reaction to CBD oil and they experience any of these symptoms, contact your vet.

Dosage Instructions

Each dog is different. Therefore, each dog will need a different amount of CBD oil. The CBD dose should be according to weight and ailment. Always start with the lowest dose and increase it slowly until you see results.  Most Veterinarians recommended 2-4 mg’s of CBD per 25 pounds per day.

Keep in mind that there are many different ways to administer CBD oil to pets. You can use CBD tinctures, CBD pet chews (the most popular method), CBD capsules, or even apply a CBD topical locally to troublesome areas.

Because CBD capsules or edibles go through the digestive process, it may take longer to see the results you're looking for. Tinctures, which are easy to measure and administer, work quickly because they bypass digestion and go to the bloodstream.

CBD Oil For Pets: Have You Tried It?

CBD for pets can be an excellent way to control what ails your pet. If you have a pet that's suffering or in pain, consider using CBD as a supplement to help promote their health and wellness.

Lastly, even though CBD only has trace amounts of THC, most veterinarians encourage their owners to purchase and use a Broad Spectrum CBD oil.  Broad Spectrum CBD contains all the beneficial Cannabinoids including CBD but does not contain any THC whatsoever. THC is not recommended in any amounts for pets because of THC’s negative psychoactive side effects.
