Can CBD Be Used for Anxiety?

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, anxiety disorders rank among the most common mental health concerns in the United States and around the world. In the US alone, anxiety affects more than 40 million adults. Worldwide data is even worse, with nearly 245 million people (4% of the world’s population) suffering from various anxiety disorders ranging from mildly stressful to downright debilitating.

While traditional pharmaceutical and lifestyle changes can (and sometimes do) offer relief, for some, harsh and expensive pharmaceuticals with lasting side effects aren’t the best option.

This has led millions around the world to seek out natural therapies and remedies in search of effective ways to manage anxiety, one of which has been CBD (cannabidiol).

Scientific Studies and Clinical Research on the Use of CBD for Anxiety

The Journal of Neurotherapeutics (2015)

Anxiety and fear are adaptive responses that all humans experience when presented with perceived threats, however, persistent fear, stress, worry and anxiety can lead to disability and a significantly lower quality of life.

According to scientists, CBD possesses a wide range of therapeutic properties ranging from anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving), to neuroprotective and anxiety modulating.

A look at studies on CBD for anxiety demonstrated that results were dose-dependent, with low and high doses largely ineffective, while moderate doses seemed effective.

Summary of Findings

“Preclinical evidence conclusively demonstrates CBD’s efficacy in reducing anxiety behaviors relevant to multiple disorders, including PTSD, GAD, PD, OCD, and SAD, with a notable lack of anxiogenic effects.”

The researchers also note that they saw minimal sedative effects and that CBD has an excellent safety profile.
